DAY 1 & DAY 2
At the eastern India on Bay of Bengal, Chennai is the capital of the state of Tamil Nadu. The city is home to the famous Fort St. George built in 1644. Religious sites include the Kapaleeshwarar Temple, adorned with carved and painted gods, and St. Mary's a 17th century Anglican Church.
Drive from Chennai to Mahabalipuram on Day 3. Mahabalipuram is a town on a trip of land between Bay of Bengal and the Great Salt Lake. It is known for its temples and monuments built in 7th and 8th centuries.
A French colonial settlement until 1954, Pondicherry is now a union territory in the state of Tamil Nadu. Its French legacy is preserved in its French Quarter with tree-lined streets, mustard-colored colonial villas and chic boutiques.
On Day 7, you drive from Pondicherry to Thanjavur. Thanjavur, formerly known as Tanjore houses most the Great Living Chola Temples. Known as the ' Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu' because of its agricultural significance, Thanjavur is also famous for the Tanjore Paintings, a style unique to the region.
Madurai is an energetic, ancient city on the Vaigai River in Tamil Nadu. Its skyline is dominated by 14 colorful gateway towers of Meenakshi Amman Temple. Covered in bright carvings of Hindu Gods, the Dravidian style temple is a major pilgrimage site. Millions attend the ceremonies of April's Chithrai Festival celebrating Meenakshi and Lord Vishnu.
The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is home to tigers and a significant elephant population, as well as rare lion-tailed macaques, sambar deer, leopards and Indian Bison.
